Carrier of the Year Awarded by Transplace at Annual Shipper Symposium in Phoenix

Three truckload transportation service providers awarded for sustainability practices, performance consistency and on-time service; two less-than-truckload providers awarded for best regional and national fleets

May 14, 2010 (Dallas, TX) – Transplace, a leading provider of transportation management services and logistics technology solutions, today announced the winners of three key performance awards within its truckload (TL) carrier merit program and two winners of its less-than-truckload (LTL) key performance awards. Convening Thursday inPhoenix, carriers of all service profiles came together at the annual Shipper Symposium to discuss industry issues such as the aftermath of the bid frenzy of 2009 and its impact on shipper/carrier relations, the effect of sustainability on fleets, and the future of freight transportation.

The Transplace Shipper Symposium is a gathering of key Transplace customers and carriers held each spring offering educational seminars, forward-thinking speakers on current market conditions, changes within the industry, and future planning. At the event, three TL carriers and two LTL carriers were awarded for their service performance under the 2009 Transplace Carrier Merit Program.

“Goals of the Carrier Merit Program include helping Transplace find growth opportunities for our carriers, sustain stable volume, and provide outstanding service to our customers,” said Kyle Alexander, director, Strategic Carrier Development. “The competition for our performance awards was very close this year, especially in the on-time performance and sustainability categories. With overall strength of competition in the program, we had several carriers within a few points of each other; but, there were carriers that clearly outperformed their peers on a number of qualitative attributes, which helped Transplace make the right selection for each category.”

At Shipper Symposium, Transplace’s Alexander presented the following awards to these winning TL carriers:

  • Transplace Carrier of the Year Award, Tri-Ways, Inc.
  • Best On-Time Service Award, Con-way Truckload
  • Sustainability Excellence Award, C.R. EnglandCon-way Truckload

Transplace Senior Vice President Steve Robinson and General Manager of Capacity Service Brandon Hamilton presented the following awards to these winning LTL carriers:

  • Best Regional Fleet, New England Motor Freight
  • Best National Fleet, FedEx Freight

Jackie Lopez, vice president of marketing for Tri-Ways, Inc., and the 2009 Carrier of the Year Award winner commented: “We’re honored to be awarded Transplace Carrier of the Year. The award is a testament to our solid relationship with Transplace and the opportunities we’ve realized since being selected as an alliance carrier. Even in a difficult economic environment, Transplace has helped us sustain a strong level of growth.”

The Transplace Carrier Merit Program categorizes carriers into tiers based on strict and demanding performance factors. The company has established two primary tiers of alliance carriers and a developmental progression plan for key carriers targeting business needs and upward movement through the merit program.

The awards are data-centric and based on companywide, quantitative data for each award selection. To be eligible for the Transplace truckload Carrier of the Year Award, a carrier must have met the following requirements:

  • Hauled at least 1,000 loads for Transplace
  • Provided freight services across five or more Transplace accounts
  • Maintained an on-time pick-up and delivery of 95 percent or better
  • Contracted as a truckload carrier
  • Actively participated as an EPA SmartWay Carrier
  • Maintained an excellent customer service relationship across all accounts
  • Utilized EDI capabilities extensively, and
  • Provided regular feedback and communication to all levels of management

For the carriers that qualified for consideration, a survey was distributed to Transplace internal accounts to vote on the top twelve carriers that exceeded the above criteria. Tri-Ways, Inc., the Transplace Carrier of the Year, maintained over a 98 percent overall on-time pick-up and delivery service for 2009.
